The Joyful Exhale vs. the Wim Hof Method
The Wim Hof Method is fast breathing, breath-holds and cold. Mine is slow breathing and release. They are not rivals so much as opposites, and I think it is worth being clear about which one you are buying. Wim Hof has one famous study and a 2024 review behind it. I do not teach fast breathing to beginners, and I will tell you why.
| The Wim Hof Method | The Joyful Exhale | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Up: fast breathing, adrenaline, cold | Down and then open: slow exhale, release |
| Sensations | Tingling, light-headed, a rush | Quiet; a warm, low felt sense |
| Evidence | Inflammatory markers: yes; outcomes: mixed | Slow exhale: small trials; release: craft |
| Risk | Real: water, holds, fainting | Minimal with the two rules |
| Best for | Healthy people who want intensity | Anyone who has to function under pressure |
What the Wim Hof Method is
The method combines rounds of thirty or forty deep, fast breaths followed by a long breath-hold on empty lungs, cold showers or ice baths, and a meditation component. The breathing drives carbon dioxide low on purpose, which produces tingling, light-headedness and a high, and the holds afterward are long because the breathing drive has been suppressed. The cold is a separate stressor with its own effects.
What the Joyful Exhale does differently
Everything in my book moves the other way: slow instead of fast, exhale instead of inhale, release instead of charge. The Wim Hof breathing is a sympathetic surge; the famous trial measured adrenaline rising sharply during it. The Joyful Exhale is a parasympathetic settle, and the ladder above it generates a quiet, pleasant felt sense rather than a rush. The cold I leave to the people who like it.
Where the Wim Hof Method wins
Wim Hof wins on intensity, and on one piece of science. The 2014 trial found that trained volunteers injected with bacterial endotoxin mounted a smaller inflammatory response and reported fewer symptoms, and a 2024 systematic review of eight trials found the effect on inflammatory markers held up across them. If you want to feel something dramatic in ten minutes, this delivers. The cold exposure has evidence of its own for mood and alertness in the short term.
Where I reach for mine
I reach for mine because most people's problem is not too little arousal. It is an idle set a few points too high all day, and the last thing that idle needs is a deliberate adrenaline spike before breakfast. The hyperventilation produces the same sensations as a panic attack, which is a strange thing to practice if panic is what you are trying to get away from. And nothing in my book can be done wrong in a way that hurts you, which is not true of fast breathing plus breath-holds plus water.
What the research says
The inflammatory finding is real and replicated in small trials, almost all in healthy young people, with no trial yet in anyone who has an inflammatory disease. Effects on exercise performance are mixed. The one trial that compared the method against meditation over a month found the method's daily effect on felt stress grew while meditation's shrank, with little difference in trait measures at the end. The method's own review authors call the evidence promising and thin at the same time, which is the honest reading.
Safety
Never in or near water, including a bathtub or a shallow pool. People have drowned after hyperventilating and holding their breath in water, because the breathing suppresses the urge that would have told them to surface. Never while driving. Not for anyone pregnant, or with heart disease, epilepsy, or panic disorder. If you do it, do it seated on a floor with someone who knows you are doing it.
Bottom line
If you want a charge and you are healthy, Wim Hof will give you one, on dry land. If you want to be steadier at 3 p.m. in a room full of people, you want the exhale.
Questions people ask
Is the Wim Hof Method dangerous?
The breathing is safe for most healthy people seated on dry land. It is dangerous in or near water, where it has caused drownings, and it is not for people with heart disease, epilepsy, pregnancy or panic disorder. The cold adds its own cardiac cautions.
Does Wim Hof breathing boost the immune system?
The trials show a damped inflammatory response to an injected bacterial fragment in healthy volunteers, driven by adrenaline. Whether that helps anyone with an actual illness has not been tested.
Can I combine Wim Hof breathing with the Joyful Exhale?
You can do slow breathing after a fast session; many people do. I would not do them the other way around, and I would not do the fast breathing at all if anxiety is the reason you are here.
In the toolkit
Two rules, no exceptions
Never practice any technique on this site while you are driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that needs your full attention. The slow ones can make you drowsy, faster than you’d expect. And never practice a breath-hold, bellows breath, or any vigorous breathing in or near water. Read Before you begin for the doctor’s list and the rest.
